Conservation Planning Pacific Islands - WestThe Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) provides conservation planning and technical assistance to clients (individuals, groups, and units of government). These clients develop and implement conservation plans to protect, conserve, and enhance natural resources (soil, water, air, plants, and animals) within their related social and economic interests. Conservation Planning FrameworkConservation planning is a natural resource problem solving and management process. The Conservation Plan is a Three-Phase, Nine-Step Process which integrates economic, social (cultural resources are included with social), and ecological considerations to meet private and public needs. The success of a conservation plan that meets or exceeds the Resource Management System (RMS) level depends on the voluntary participation of cooperators. Conservation Planning Format and ContentThe conservation plan is developed by the client for the client's use to record decisions for natural resource protection, conservation, and enhancement. The NRCS copy of the plan is maintained in hard copy or electronically as appropriate. Although the conservation plan is tailored to the each cooperator's individual needs, the Conservation Plan Format and Content should contain all required documentation. Conservation Planning FundamentalsDo not forget the fundamentals of a good conservation plan. All natural resources are interrelated together and the treatment of one resource concern may have a positive or negative effect on other resources. This reiterates the importance of having the decision maker involved throughout the entire planning process. Remember, a good conservation plan is the result of a collaborative effort on the part of the planner and the decision maker, as they work together to implement a sound conservation plan by applying the fundamentals of conservation planning.
