About Pacific Islands - West NRCS

The 2,204 islands of the Pacific Islands - West (PI-West) cover an approximate area of 5,000,000 square miles of ocean. The annual mean rainfall of about 100 inches contribute to high erosion rates that affect the quality of the drinking water, the productivity of the land and the health of the coral reefs. This presents a challenging set of problems unique to the inhabitants of the PI-West. NRCS brings nearly 70 years of experience to work in assisting owners of private land with conserving soil, water, and other natural resources. Local, state and federal agencies and policymakers also rely on our expertise. NRCS staff in the PI-West deliver technical assistance based on sound science suited to local needs and objectives.

Most of our work is done with local partners, including the Pacific Basin Association of Conservation Districts (PBACD) and the local Conservation Districts associated with PBACD. Participation in all our programs is voluntary.

Our Mission
The Mission of the PI-West Natural Resource Conservation Service is to provide progressive leadership and to work with partners for wise use and protection of our islands' resources.

Our Vision
People working together toward a healthy and productive environment through planned, wise, culturally appropriate use of island resources.
